# What Keel can do

Keel is GoRunner’s assistant. It builds, explains and fixes workflows with you.

## Ask in your own words

Open **Keel** in the sidebar, or press **Keel** in a workflow’s top bar. Then say what should happen, such as “When someone fills in my form, add them to my sheet”. Keel drafts the steps and checks each one.

## Commands

Type `/` in Keel’s field for a shortcut:

- `/build`: **Build a workflow.** Describe it, and Keel drafts the steps.
- `/fix`: **Fix a failure.** The latest failed run, or type `#` to pick one.
- `/explain`: **Explain a workflow**, step by step, with anything fragile called out.
- `/import`: **Import from n8n / Activepieces.** Opens the file picker. Only on Keel’s own page, not in a workflow’s Keel panel.
- `/finish`: **Finish an imported workflow.** Fills in what the import couldn’t.
- `/publish`: **Publish when proven.** Proposes it once it checks out.

## In Keel’s field

- `@`: A workflow of this workspace. In a workflow, a step of it.
- `#`: A recent run, of this workflow or of all.
- **Model**: **Default model**, your organization’s pick, or one model and how hard it thinks, for this conversation. Not in the Embed.
- `Enter`: Send. `Shift``Enter` adds a line, and `Esc` stops Keel’s reply.

## Cards: you decide

Keel shows each change as a card. Press **Apply** to make it, or **Run test**, **Publish** or **Unpublish** when that’s the card’s job. **Apply all** applies every draft change in a reply. A test or a publish card keeps its own key.

Applying saves a draft. Nothing runs until you publish, and **Undo** puts the draft back as it was.

## How much Keel does on its own

Choose a level in Keel’s field. Each says what Keel may do:

- **Ask**: Every change is a card you apply.
- **Draft**: Draft edits apply when Keel’s reply ends. Production stays yours.
- **Operate**: Keel publishes and runs without asking. After reading outside data, it asks before it publishes. Deletes stay yours.
- **Full**: Everything your role allows, when you ask for it.

A new conversation starts at **Ask**. You can go no higher than your organization’s limit and your role allow. Owners and admins set that limit in **Settings › Organization › Keel**.

## Your conversations

- **Conversations**: Find one with `Ctrl``/`, or start one with `Ctrl``Shift``O`.
- **Delete conversation**: Removes it and its cards. The workflows it made stay, but you lose **Undo** on its changes.
- **What Keel did**: On Keel’s page: what Keel changed without a click in the last 7 days, and what Maintenance mode did.

Each act is in the [audit log](https://docs.gorunner.io/build/audit-log).

**How does Keel check a draft?**

Each card is checked the way **Publish** checks a workflow.

Keel then tries the wiring on each step’s sample data. It flags a value that would arrive empty, a loop over something that isn’t a list, or a `{{$vars.X}}` no variable declares. Where it can’t know, such as after a Code step, it says nothing.

When no app exists for a service, Keel says so and uses **HTTP Request**.

## When Keel is asleep

Keel needs an AI provider. Until an owner or admin adds one, Keel says **Keel is asleep.** See [Set up Keel](https://docs.gorunner.io/build/set-up-keel).
