# Trello

Create, move and update Trello cards, comment on them, manage checklists, labels, attachments and custom fields, and work with lists, boards and board members.

## Connect Trello

1. In the sidebar, open **Connections** and press **Add connection**.
2. Type `trello` and choose **Trello**.
3. Fill in the fields. Each one says **Required** or **Optional**.
4. Press **Test and save**. GoRunner checks the connection before it saves anything.

The sheet asks for:

- **API key · Required**: The API key of your Trello Power-Up (32 characters).
- **Token · Required**: A token made for that key (the Token link beside it). A token made with an expiration (1 hour, 1 day, 30 days) stops working then; make a new one and update the connection.
- **API secret · Optional**: Optional; steps do not use it. The Power-Up’s secret, which Trello signs each webhook delivery with.

Paste a Trello API key and a token made for it. At trello.com/apps/admin create a Power-Up (or open yours), generate an API key in its Trello Auth tab, then follow the Token link beside the key and allow access. The token acts as you: steps see the boards you can see.

[Connections](https://docs.gorunner.io/build/connections) says how to sign in again, rename or delete it. In a product that embeds GoRunner, **Add connection** can be missing: then [your provider makes connections](https://docs.gorunner.io/embed/customer-connections) for you.

## Start a workflow

Add a trigger and choose **Trello**. The trigger uses the same connection as the steps.

### On Trello Activity

Starts a run each time Trello reports activity on the board, list or card below (on a board, that includes its lists and cards). Publishing the workflow registers a Trello webhook pointed at it, replacing any left from before; unpublishing removes it. Trello signs every delivery with your Power-Up's API secret, so the connection needs it (API secret); a delivery without a valid signature is refused. Trello repeats a delivery that was not answered; the repeat starts no second run. Trello removes the webhook when the connection's token is revoked or expires.

- **Board, List or Card · Required**: What to watch: pick a board, or paste a board, list or card id, or a board or card link.
- **Only These Activities · Optional**: Start a run only for these kinds of activity. Leave empty to start one for every activity. Options: Card created to Power-Up disabled (43 options).

A later step can use its data, such as `{{trigger.action}}`, `{{trigger.model}}`, `{{trigger.trello}}`. See [Use data from earlier steps](https://docs.gorunner.io/build/use-data-from-earlier-steps).

## Do things in Trello

Add a **Trello** step, choose a **Resource**, then an **Operation**. Choose a row to see its fields.

- [Card](https://docs.gorunner.io/apps/trello#fields-f-card): Create · Get · Get Many on a Board · Search · Update · Move · Archive · Unarchive · Add Member · Remove Member · Set Custom Field · Delete
- [Card Comment](https://docs.gorunner.io/apps/trello#fields-f-cardcomment): Create · Get Many · Update · Delete
- [Checklist](https://docs.gorunner.io/apps/trello#fields-f-checklist): Create · Get · Get Many · Delete · Create Checklist Item · Get Checklist Item · Update Checklist Item · Delete Checklist Item · Get Completed Checklist Items
- [Label](https://docs.gorunner.io/apps/trello#fields-f-label): Create · Get · Get Many · Update · Delete · Add to Card · Remove from Card
- [Attachment](https://docs.gorunner.io/apps/trello#fields-f-attachment): Create · Get · Get Many · Download · Delete
- [List](https://docs.gorunner.io/apps/trello#fields-f-list): Create · Get · Get Many · Get Cards · Update · Archive · Unarchive
- [Board](https://docs.gorunner.io/apps/trello#fields-f-board): Create · Get · Get Many · Update · Delete
- [Board Member](https://docs.gorunner.io/apps/trello#fields-f-boardmember): Add · Get Many · Invite · Remove

Later steps read a step’s output by its name: see [Use data from earlier steps](https://docs.gorunner.io/build/use-data-from-earlier-steps).

## Limits

- A reply from Trello can be up to 16 MB (a file download can have its own limit). A larger one fails the step; it is never cut short.
- When Trello says to slow down (429), the step waits as long as it asks, if the step’s time allows. Otherwise it fails and says when to try again.

Not in your list? See [When an app isn’t here](https://docs.gorunner.io/apps/when-an-app-isnt-here#q-not-in-list).

## For developers

In the API, which calls apps pieces, Trello is `pieceId: "trello"` with `actionId: "trello"`, set by `resource` and an `operation_…` field, such as `operation_attachment`. Its trigger is `trellotrigger` / `trello_event`. [Get an app](https://docs.gorunner.io/api/apps/get-app) returns every field.

It can change something outside the run (`writes_external`). See [How versions and side effects work](https://docs.gorunner.io/apps#q-versions).
